Grand Duchess George (1876-1940) was a great-granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I and first cousin and confidant of the last Tar, Nicholas II. Her marriage to Grand Duke George of Russia (1863-1919) was an unhappy one. On the pretext of improving her daughter's health, on doctor's advice she left Russia with her daughters Nina and Xenia in July 1914 to stay in Harrogate, Yorkshire. Following the outbreak of World War I the following month they were never to return to Russia. He husband was killed with other members of his family on the 28th January 1919.
