Barcelona: Sebastian y Jayme Matevad, 1640. Small 2° (264 x 189mm). Title with typographical border and engraved arms of Barcelona after I. de Courbes, next leaf with full-page woodcuts of a chalice and of St. Eulalia, woodcut leafy initials, final leaf with device of Jerónimo Margarit [Vindel. Escudos y marcas , no. 453]. Text in double rule. (Some soiling, occasional stains, title affected by red and brown spotting and with small repair at bottom margin, internal repairs to B4 and M2-3, M3v with creaseline affecting lettering, C1-2 extended at bottom margin, corner repair and creasemarks to final leaf.) Red morocco by [?]Miquel Rius with all-over gilt design centering on the cross of Barcelona, gilt turn-ins and green silk liners, gilt edges, slipcase. Provenance : José Porter, 1957.

LAVISHLY BOUND FIRST EDITION of a key work ('obra importante y pieza capital') on the 'Guerra de los segadores' or 'Reapers' War' affecting the greater part of Catalonia between 1640 and 1652. 'Se manifiestan los servicios y glorias de Cataluña,' states Palau, 'y se detallan los vejámenes sufridos por la opresión castellana'. St. Eulalia, whom the book illustrates, is the patron saint of Barcelona. Sala also wrote Lagrimas catalanas (1641). Palau XIV, 238272.
