Title: San Francisco Prices Current and Shipping List Author: Place: Publisher: Date: 1852 Description: San Francisco Prices Current and Shipping List, March 20, 1852. 9 x 11”, 3pp. + integral stampless address leaf, posted by Blood’s Despatch to Stephen Baldwin & Co. [Philadelphia]. Lists newly-arrived vessels and the high prices of goods in San Francisco in the third year of the Gold Rush. Includes prices for boots and jeans (pre-Levi Strauss); lumber from Oregon and Humboldt; Chinese velvets, satins, rice and tea; patent medicines and drugs (such as Turkish Opium); goose feathers; gunpowder; axes and picks; British Beer, French brandy, wine and champagne, and Scotch whiskey, and Havana “segars”. The accompanying “review of the market” mentions inclement weather which “retarded the successful progress of mining” and “disastrous” rain storms that threatened the “complete destruction” of Sacramento and Marysville, while, on the bright side, the arrival of three whaling vessels “have attracted considerable attention among the enterprising of our community and will doubtless lead to the early and more ample development of the resources of our coasts and bays”. And this final upbeat declaration: “The will and power of California enterprise do not succumb to any disaster”. Lot Amendments Condition: Item number: 247687
