SANQUIRICO, Allessandro (1777-1849).
Oblong 2 o (455 x 376 mm). 75 hand-colored acquatints by G. Castellini Carolina Lose, Bramati, A. Biasioli, C. Sanquirico, Durelli, L. Rados, Rainieri, A. Angeli, F. Albertoli, G. Alluisetti, D.K. Binatti, C. Zucchi and L. Castellini after drawings by Allessandro Sanquirico (short marginal repaired tear on pl. 45, very minor handling soilmarks to lower outside corners). Contemporary embossed morocco (skillfully rebacked preserving original spine, repairs to corners). A remarkable collection of hand-colored plates illustrating the set decorations for LA SCALA IN MILAN all designed by Alessandro Sanquirico From 1817-1832, Sanquirico was the chief scenic artist at La Scala, and his work became notable for his use of exotic locations and neo-classical architecture in his set designs. The scenography created by Sanquirico for La Scala reached a higher level than contemporary designs in opera houses of any other European country. From 1817 to 1832 he was the sole set designer there, designing sets for the productions of operas by Donizetti, Rossini, Bellini, Mozart, Meyerbeer and Pacini. Among the hundreds of operas he worked on, the premieres for Rossini's La gazza ladra (1817), Bellini's (La Straniera (1829) and Norma (1831) and Donizetti's Il Pirata (1827) stand out as exceptional critical and artistic successes. A definitive collation does not exist, and copies are recorded with varying numbers of plates, most likely depending on the purchaser who commissioned their collection into a volume.
