SCHIZZI, Count Folchino. Un Bel Giorno. Poemetto . Milan: Typografia Bettoni, 1827. 2° (485 x 350mm). Engraved frontispiece portraits of Emperor Francis I and Marie Louise of Austria by G. Geniani after G. Beltrami, 7 aquatint plates by Gaetano Durelli after Francesco Durelli Woodcut arms of Maria Louisa of Austria on title, woodcut headbands, woodcut printer's device on colophon, text and woodcuts printed in blue. (A few light spots and marks.) BINDING: Italian early 19th-century, straight-grained green roan gilt [possibly by Lodigiani], boards with central gilt armorials of Marie Louise as Archduchess of Austria [cf. Olivier 2654 fer 10], enclosed by gilt tools of floral bouquets and blind quater-circles of radiant lines, broad borders formed by triple gilt fillets, enclosing gilt lyre-and-horn cornerpieces and blind-tooled diamonds terminated in gilt triangles filled with various tools on a pointillé field, gilt board edges, spine gilt in compartments and lettered in gilt, blue silk doublures with onlaid gilt red morocco borders, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed and bumped, some light oxidisation to gilt on doublures , unobtrusive minor worming on joints and doublures ). PROVENANCE: Marie Louise, Archduchess of Austria (binding) -- sale Sotheby's (The Library of Marie Louise, Archduchess of Austria), 26 July 1933, lot 29, to: -- [Maggs Brothers] -- Sir Robert Abdy (booklabel; sale, Paris, 29-30 April 1976, lot 88). Second edition. DEDICATION COPY ON LARGE PAPER, FROM THE LIBRARY OF MARIE LOUISE OF AUSTRIA IN A FINE ARMORIAL BINDING. The daughter of Emperor Francesco I of Austria, Marie Louise (1791-1847) married Napoleon I in 1810, but bore little love for her husband, and, after his abdication in 1814, she lived separately, taking the title of Archduchess of Austria and Duchess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla. The present volume bears Marie Louise's arms as Archduchess of Austria and Duchess of Parma etc. (rather than as Empress of France), and is the dedication copy of the second edition of Schizzi's poem, printed in blue on large paper and elaborately bound. Volumes from Marie Louise's library bearing these arms are uncommon, since the majority are simply identified by her crowned monogram -- in the 1933 Sotheby's sale of nearly 260 lots, only seven lots (including this) bore her arms as Duchess of Parma. Although it does not bear his ticket, it is possible that the binding was executed by Lodigiani, who was Maria Louisa's principal binder (cf. her sale for works bound for her by him).
