SCHUYLER, Philip John (1733-1804), Major General, Continental Army . Autograph letter signed ("Ph: Schuyler") to Richard Varick (1753-1851), Philadelphia, 16 April 1777. 1 page, folio, fine. Schuyler, replaced as commander of the northern American armies by Gen. Gates, writes from Philadelphia, where he is meeting with Congress to argue his removal: "Some people...were in hopes that I would have resigned Immediately...Finding that I would not do that, they wish to avoid an Enquiry and throw out that there are no Complaints against me...They have however gone too far, and all that stands on their Journals Injurious to me must be Expressed or I quit the Service. Mr. Livingston & Mr. Duane are this day arrived and my business will be opened tomorrow." Schuyler won his case, and was reinstated briefly. After relinquishing Fort Ticonderoga to Burgoyne a few months later, however, he was once again relieved by Gates and in 1779 left the service.
