The Edison Electric Light Company was founded on October 15, 1878 to support Edison's lighting research, with financial and organizational support provided by Grosvenor P. Lowrey, J.P. Morgan, and others. In 1890 the company merged with several other Edison companies to become the Edison General Electric Company, and by 1892 with the merger of Thomson-Houston Companies, General Electric.
