Lodge (1558-1625), a playwright, poet and novelist, dedicated the latter part of his life to classical translations. While there had been earlier translations of two of Seneca's works-- De Remediis Fortuitorum by Robert Whittington (London: W. Myddylton, 1547) and De Beneficiis by A. Golding (London: J. Day, 1578)--this was the first full translation of Seneca's philosophical writings and includes the Flemish humanist, Iustus Lipsius' Life of Seneca and his notes to The Epistles .
