(Repairs to title and last leaf, occasional browning and spotting, a few stains.) Modern morocco by Tregaskis (spine faded, joints lightly rubbed). Provenance : Lionel Landon (inscription dated 1902). THE SECOND BOOK PUBLISHED BY PLANTIN AND THE FIRST TO CARRY HIS DEVICE. In his memoirs, Cordero, who worked as a proof-reader for Martin Nucius at Antwerp, recorded that his translation of Seneca was the first book to be printed by Plantin. The book is listed as the second of three works in the first privilege granted to Plantin on 5 April 1555; it is generally thought that Bruto, La institutions di unafanciulla nata nobilmente , was the first book produced by the Plantin press. See Voet, The Golden Compasses , pp. 17-18, for discussion about the printer of Flores. Palau 307855 ('beautiful edition'); Voet 2200.
