SEUTTER, GEORG MATTHÄUS (1678-1757). Atlas Novus Indicibus Instructus, oder Neuer mit Wort-Registern Versehener Atlas... haupt-und Special-Tabellen. Vienna: J.P.v. Bhelen, 1730 [-1746]. 2° (535 x 315mm). German and Latin text. Hand-coloured engraved allegorical frontispiece, title printed in red and black, 60 hand-coloured double-page engraved maps, each with elaborate allegorical cartouches of titles, interleaved with accompanying indices, including two duplicate maps, no.s 30 and 31 'Circulus Saxonicus Inferioris' and 'Superioris', and 5 additional later plates including 'Lusatiae Superioris' and 'Inferioris', 'Ducatus Silesiae' in 2 parts, and table 'Poliometrica Germaniae', woodcut headpieces and initials, 2 plates of slightly smaller dimensions, mounted on guards (lacking maps 17, Hungary, and 36, Austria, and index to map 16, some marginal repaired tears, a few minor marginal creases, some margins reinforced, occasional light dampstaining, small hole to text of index 33). Contemporary limp calf wallet binding, upper cover with blind-stamped title (some light wear). Provenance: bought by P. Amandus Radüff, Anbaldus Eallae, 1731 (inscription to title); notes on loose leaves in a 19th-century hand relating to Napoleon Bonaparte and the Marchals of France. An impressive copy of Seutter's Atlas Novus , published with Matthäus Roth. An enlarged edition containing 60 plates including the world and celestial maps and those of Europe, Asia, Africa and America. First published in 1720 with 16 maps, the index to this copy calls for 50 maps - early annotations have been made in ink to show the amended content, which includes two duplicate maps of Saxony (with slight changes to imprints) and five later, unumbered plates, two of which bear the imprint of Homann's Heirs, 1745 and 1746.
