PRINTED ON VELLUM. Roman letter, 35 lines, with shoulder notes. Title with Badius's woodcut press device, 6 criblé initials of 6 and 10 lines. (Occasional light soiling or staining, e4 and f7 with small hole at margin.) Early 19th-century blue morocco, sides with wide gilt dentelle panels, gilt spine directly lettered in three compartments, gilt turn-ins, gilt and gauffured edges (upper cover lightly scuffed). Provenance : Philip Augustus Hanrott (his sale, Evans, 20 February 1834, 12th day, to Payne for £2.2.0, described as bound in green morocco) -- Beriah Botfield, acquired from Payne & Foss for £16.16.0 (P. & F. Acquisitions, p. 82). A RARE EXAMPLE OF PRINTING ON VELLUM BY BADé. Brunet records another copy of the same work on vellum presented to Leo X, and preserved as part of the Magliabecchi library at Florence. The dedication copy is noted in the Hanrott catalogue, and said to be the only other copy on vellum known. Claude de Seyssel, Archbishop of Turin, was author of La Grant Monarchie de France (1519), and translator of Thucydides, Xenophon and other Greek authors. This was the third edition of his Expositio evangelii Lucae , enlarged from the two editions printed by Badé the previous year. In his short preface, Guillaume Petit acknowledges that he has supervised the production of the book and praises the work of Badé.
