[SHAKESPEARE, William (1564-1616)] – DAVENANT, Sir William (1606-1668) and John DRYDEN (1631-1700). The Tempest, or the Enchanted Island. A comedy as it is now acted at His Highness the Duke of York's Theatre . London: by J. Macock for Henry Herringman, 1676. Third edition of Davenant and Dryden’s adaptation and the first version to be separately printed. Both the second and third editions include more elaborate stage directions as well as additions and alterations by Thomas Shadwell (c.1642-1692), which then appear in every successive edition until 1800. The original play, though the last to be written by Shakespeare, occupied first place in the 1623 folio. ESTC R21696; Jaggard p.463; Wing S-2946A. Quarto (210 x 157mm). With the blank M2 (tiny rust hole in G1, some lights spots and stains). 20th-century maroon half morocco by Wallis, spine lettered in gilt (lightly rubbed). Provenance : ‘morgan’? (early marginal annotation on G2r).
