SHAW, GEORGE BERNARD. Autograph endorsement signed, n.p., 25 June 1912. 6 lines plus signature and date at top of a TLS from Harold Bolce, a journalist, 1 page, 4to, tipped to another sheet . Shaw's response to a request to attend a National Temperance League conference on the effects of drink: "The truth about the Drink Question is that in our dishonourable commercial civilization it is impossible for a sober man to be happy. In an honourable civilization, it would be impossible for a drunken man to be happy. What is the matter with us is not Alcoholism, but Anarchy and Blackguardism." -- SHAW, GEORGE BERNARD. Autograph note signed, London, 6 March 1926. 1 page, small 4to, mounted on another sheet , headed "Private" at top. REFUSING TO DEBATE G.K. CHESTERTON. "I am only too familiar with the unscrupulousness of religious Societies when there is a chance of replenishing their treasuries; but really I am suprised at your proposing such a piece of pure intellectual mischiefmaking from your point of view as a debate with G.K.C[hesteron]. Why do you want to involve him in a controversy with a friend who is only too willing to let him alone? To score debating points against his connections and vision would be to me a revolting indelicacy. I refuse absolutely" -- SHAW, GEORGE BERNARD. Autograph letter signed to Nicol Dunn, Springburn, Argyllshire, 31 August 1903. 2 pages, 4to, slight browning . Forwarding his new book: "...I should have sent you a copy from the first batch that reached me if you were not an editor, to whom an unreviewed book means a bit of business to be done -- a thing destructive to a holiday...Spenser Williamson has rolled my log handsomely down a whole column of the U.P.; and you can read the book like an unborn child. This is my first visit to Scotland. I am unquestionably a Scotchman -- Shaw of Fife. My original ancestor was Macduff: hency my taste for Shakespeare. These facts can be established by our cook here: she acknowledges me as a kinsman...The book is devilish amusing -- contains lots of things that Jackson implored me to leave out...."
