Geo. H. Preble USN with the very kind regards of the Author, Hong Kong, 12 Jan. 185 [final digit cropped by binder]," pasted in is an Autograph Letter Signed from Bowring to Preble, Canton, China, 28 Dec. 1855, 2 pages, 12mo, some fold tears, with original envelope, the second page of the letter containing a 12-line signed poem by Bowring. Preble (see DAB) was with Perry's Expedition to Japan at the time he met Bowring; he later became a Rear Admiral. Bowring (see DNB) was a hymnist, poet and diplomat; in 1854 he was appointed plenipotentiary to China and governor of Hong Kong. (2)
