The present lot, by world-renowned street artist Shepard Fairey defies conventional restraints and symbolizes the artist's fearless approach to creation. Fairey first gained recognition in 1989 for his creation of the "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" sticker and graffiti campaign. The inspiration for "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" stencil came from images of André René Roussimoff, a French professional wrestler, often featured in the Weekly Work News. Fairey's original 1989 sticker read "ANDRÉ THE GIANT HAS A POSSE" and included his height and weight of 7' 4", 520 lb" (2.24 m, 236 kg). Fairey later changed the format to a more stylized portrait of Roussimoff's face with the words Obey beneath, creating the meme Obey Giant.
Shepard Fairey's Phone Booth from 2011 is a riot of signature imagery, blending styles from various sources, including Russian Constructivism, wartime propaganda, Barbara Kruger's advertising techniques, and Jasper Johns' appropriation of Americana imagery. Fairey has placed prominent stencils of the Obey Gaint tag on the telephone book holder and both sides of the phone booths' outside walls. Fairey has also replaced the telephone book with his monograph, "Obey: Supply and Demand: The Art of Shepard Fairey 2008," complete with his signature. Phone Booth exemplifies the provocative nature of Fairey's practice, posing controversial questions while also poking fun at the more ridiculous aspects of modern society. Fairey writes about the Obey: Giant and his practice as a street artist: "whether the reaction be positive or negative, the stickers existence is worthy as long as it causes people to consider the details and meanings of their surroundings. In the name of fun and observation."
