CGC certified: VG- (3.5). Cream to off-white pages. Cover: Wally Wood. Plots & scripts: Bill Gaines and Al Feldstein Art: Jack Kamen Wally Wood, Joe Orlando, Jack Davis GPAnalysis: Most recent result in this grade is $120, February 2018. A 3.0 sold for $131 in August 2020. In Wally Wood and Al Feldstein's "The Guilty!," a black man falsely accused of killing a white woman is murdered by the town sheriff in cold blood. This story was EC's first "preachie" to address racial prejudice, and it came a full eight years before Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" visited similar territory. The strong reader response shows that the story struck a raw nerve — while some readers were appalled ("I found it the most disgusting, degrading, and unnecessary story I have ever read"), most readers saluted Gaines, Feldstein and Wood for their willingness to take a stand ("It took great genius combined with just plain guts to publish it"). "Sixty years after their original publication, it is almost impossible to imagine how daring the first two Shock 'preachies,' as Gaines called them, must have seemed in 1952.... [They] could certainly not have been dramatized on radio or television at that time, and possibly not in a commercial film." — Bill Mason, Came the Dawn and Other Stories by Wallace Wood Fantagraphics: 2012, p. ix. A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake.
