Butterflies hover over the flowers and birds sit on the fence. Flanking the house is the text: Eliza Reed Wrou / Ght this Work in / the 10th year of / her age 1829 / born March 5th / 1820 Cincinnati / Ohio and Short is our longe / st day of life / And soon its / prospect ends / yet on that days. The entirety is then surrounded by a vine and floral motif. In a modern frame; approx. 15" x 15.25". Accompanying the sampler are a few items owned by Eliza, including a print and watercolor fan, which according to the attached note, was used by her when she attended a reception in 1826 welcoming Lafayette to Cincinnati, at which the French hero kissed the young Eliza. Also included is a friendship album, in which Eliza gathered the autographs and well wishes of her friends in the late 1830s. Finally, included is a copy of Lectures on the Institution of the Sabbath by the Reverend John S. Stone (NY: Alexander V. Blake, 1844), with an inscription to Eliza from her husband, Shadford Easton. This sampler has descended in the family of Eliza Reed Easton until the present owner. According to family history, Eliza's father made the miniature chest of drawers in LOT 92. A pair of ambrotypes of Eliza and her husband, taken by Cincinnati African American photographer James Presley Ball are scheduled to be sold in Cowan's Spring 2005 Historic Americana auction. Condition:Sampler with even toning, a few spot and minor wear, not removed from frame; VG. Fan is VG, books are both G+.
