Includes: a) 440 Club [San Francisco]: two typed invoices from Bruce’s management agency for his April-May 1958 engagement at the 440 Club in North Beach -- this was Bruce’s breakout SF performance. Jazz/rock critic Ralph J. Gleason attended opening night and his review earned Lenny his moniker as the “sick” comedian. b) Gate of Horn [Sept 1962]. Two typed letters from club owner Alan Ribback pleading with Bruce not to cancel his Chicago engagement Nov-Dec, 1962. It was the second week of this engagement that led to Bruce’s first conviction for obscenity. [He was acquitted of his earlier SF arrest] c) Typed letter forwarding Bruce’s contract for his March 1962 Carnegie Hall performance. [Letter only, not the contract.] ”I believe it would be to his interest for the performance to be commensurate with the standard of Carnegie Hall. I’m sure we would not want to damage his career, or to jeopardize any future concert hall appearances by Mr. Bruce.”
