Silhouette Portrait of Robert Livingston, Administrator of Presidential Oath to Wash inton, attributed to Charles Willson Peale early 19th century, the subject identified in inscription below "Chancellor Livingston" and a label on reverse, hollow cut bust-length portrait backed with black silk, with embossed "Peales Museum" mark, (stains, toning), sight size 4 1/4 x 3 3/8 in., in a later molded bird's-eye maple frame. Note: Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813), was a member of the Provincial Congress of New York, the Continental Congress during the years from 1776-83, and was the Chancellor of New York State in 1783. He was also a delegate to the New York ratifying Convention in 1788 and a minister to the Court of Napoleon, 1801-(c. 1805). He was a member of the Committee of Five that drafted the Declaration of Independence and served as Secretary of Foreign Affairs from 1781 to 1783. In 1789 as Chancellor of the State of New York, Livingston administered the first term oath of office to George Washington at Federal Hall in New York City.
