SINCLAIR, Isabella [Mrs. Francis, Jr.] Indigenous Flowers of the Hawaiian Islands. Forty-four Plates Painted in Water-colours and Described . London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington, 1885. 2 o (368 x 268 mm). 44 chromolithographed plates after Sinclair by Leighton Brothers. (Title-page foxed, some occasional pale spotting.) Original pictorial cloth, the front cover gilt-lettered and -decorated (worn, inner hinges reinforced but weak). Provenance : Frederick W. Wickman (bookplate); Portland Garden Club (stamp on verso of front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION. According to H. St. John in Pacific Science , 1954: "This is the first book with colour pictures of Hawaiian flowering plants... Even today it has more colour plates of Hawaiian plants than any other book." Great Flower Books , p.139; Nissen BBI 1848.
