Sinking of the Titanic, 1912 Presentation (?) uniface bronze portrait medal. Obverse: bust of Captain Arthur Rostron facing right with inscription around, S.S. Titanic - April 15 1912 - S.S. Carpathia , -- 51mm dia , designed by T. Spicer-Simson. (Almost extremely fine and rare) Formerly Captain of the unknown Carpathia , a small steamer on Cunard's Fiume [Adriatic Coast] to New York service, Rostron achieved international fame virtually overnight by his saving of the survivors from the wreck of the Titanic . Having received the distress calls when 58 miles from the stricken liner, Rostron drove his ship through the night as fast as he dared but failed to reach the scene until after the Titanic had gone down. His efforts saved 704 lives however and, when Carpathia docked in New York the following Thursday evening, her name and that of her captain were already immortalised in maritime history. Although little is known about the above medal, the fact that it is uniface suggests that it was intended for presentation and that details of the recipients would have been engraved upon the plain reverse.
