Beschreibung:

(Sir David) Ane Dialog betuix Experience and ane Courteour, fourth edition, the second Edinburgh edition, black letter, initial blank with fragmentary gift inscription dated 1560, 2ff. of 20th century biographical notes bound in between blank and title, initial blank extensively repaired, title and final f. lightly soiled, some water-staining, mostly marginal, but heavier to last couple of sigs., occasional soiling or finger-marking, modern half morocco, spine gilt, housed in a modern buckram drop-back box, small 4to, [Edinburgh], [J.Scot] at the Command and Expensis of Doctor Nachabeus, [1559]. *** A rare unrecorded variant of this very scarce collection of Elizabethan Scottish poetry. We can trace only two later London editions at auction. The first edition was printed by John Scot in around 1554. Over the following years, he printed other works by Lindsay with separate undated title pages and combined them with the unsold sheets of the 1554 Dialog. When the remainder of Scot's first edition was exhausted in around 1559, he produced the present reprint and continued to combine it with the minor poems as before. This copy seems to have been issued without the minor poems and in addition there is a slight variation to the title ('Rowen' in place of 'France').Within this same period two further editions were printed at Rouen.
