FIRST EDITION WITH A FINE PROVENANCE, IN A SUITABLY 'READ' CONDITION. This copy used by the Ross Sea Party on board the Aurora as it made its way to the opposite side of the continent from Shackleton. The shore party, under the eventual leadership of Joyce, was given the task of laying six depots along a 400 mile route between Ross Island and Mount Hope for the use of Shackleton and five companions on the final legs of their proposed trans-antarctic expedition. Despite enourmous hardships, scurvy and the death of a number the party's members, Joyce carried out their assignment. Ernest Edward Mills Joyce was a third generation seaman, serving off Cape Town during the Boer War, when he was selected for a vacancy on Discovery expedition. He took part in a number of sledge journeys and became friendly with Shackleton. In 1907 Shackleton was looking out of his office window in London and saw Joyce on the top deck of a passing bus. He sent his secretary in pursuit and persuaded Joyce to join his Nimrod expedition, where he was put in charge of provisions and dogs. Joyce was awarded the Albert medal for his inspirational leadership of the Ross Sea shore party. Sold as an association copy, not subject to return. (2)
