Sir John William Kaye. India Ancient and Modern, 2 vol., chromolithograph dedication and 50 plates mounted on card, a few with marginal tears, vol.2 title torn, occasional foxing, mostly to plate guards or margins, contemporary red half morocco, worn, covers and endpapers detached, backstrips lacking, large folio, 1867. *** Simpson was sent to India on a roving commission to produce drawings and paintings intended for a large volume to illustrate the subject of India and its people. He arrived in Calcutta in October 1859 and joined the party of the Governor-General, Lord Canning, on a tour of the area where the mutiny had taken place. Over three years he visited much of the subcontinent, including the Himalayas, Kashmir, Ceylon, Tibet and its Buddhist temples.
