Joyce Carey was one of Coward's oldest colleagues and part of his inner circle of friends and family throughout his life. She performed in a number of his plays and productions throughout the years, and first performed in the West End in the 1916 production of Mr. Wu. The setting of this painting possibly depicts the same scene as 'Trees by the edge of the Lake', also by Coward, sold at Christie's, 16th July 2014, lot 50. This work is accompanied by the book, 'Out in the Midday Sun, The Paintings of Noel Coward', by Sheridan Morley, Oxford, 1988.
