SIR RICHARD PHILLIPS (1767-1840, editor)
SIR RICHARD PHILLIPS (1767-1840, editor) A Collection of Modern and Contemporary Voyages and Travels . London: J.G. Barnard [vols I and VI-VIII], Barnard & Sulzer [vols II-III], and B. McMillan [vols IX-XI] for Richard Phillips 1805-1810. 11 volumes, 8° (215 x 137mm). 17 engraved maps, 14 folding, and 82 plates, 39 folding and 6 hand-coloured. (Occasional light browning, offsetting and spotting, a few plates torn at folds.) Contemporary half diced Russia gilt over marbled boards, spines panelled in blind, marbled edges (lightly rubbed, corners slightly bumped, some light cracking on joints or hinges). Provenance : Viscount Doneraile (contemporary inscriptions on most titles; probably Hayes, 3rd Viscount, 1786-1854) -- Quentin Keynes (1921-2003). A RARE COMPLETE SET of the first series of fifty-four travel accounts selected and edited by Phillips and first issued in monthly parts, here with the general- and part-titles to each volume: the set includes Tuckey's voyage to New South Wales, Sarychev's voyage to the Arctic, Johnson's voyage in the Caroline to India and China, Helms' travels to Lima, Péron's voyage to Australia and the South Seas, de Pons' voyage to the Spanish Main, and Lewis and Clark's expedition. Complete sets are rarely found as this format was issued only for the nobility and the wealthy (for example, this copy bears the inscriptions of Viscount Doneraile); only three other complete sets are recorded by ABPC since 1975. Phillips published a further series in 9 volumes in 1819 to 1823 as New Voyages and Travels . Ferguson 405; Hill 1349 ('complete sets are rarely found'); Sabin 62506 ('often found incomplete'). (11)
