FIRST EDITION WITH AN EVOCATIVE PROVENANCE: George Back would have appreciated, as few others could have, the difficulties encountered by Parry during his fourth Arctic voyage on the Hecla . The ship was secured in Teurenberg Bay on the north coast of Spitzbergen, and using two specially constructed boats, fitted with sled-runners and small wheels, the expedition left on June 21st 1827. The wheels proved to be useless and were removed, and the broken surface of the ice meant that hauling the boats proved a great deal more arduous than anticipated: they managed only seven miles a day rather than the planned thirteen and a half. On July 23rd their position was found to be only 82° 45' North and the attempt on the Pole was abandoned. Sabin 58868.
