Lot of 6 CDVs. An unknown ensign wearing the simple insignia prescribed under the 1862 Regulations, namely a single band on the cuff coupled with an a canted anchor on the shoulder strap. The photographer originally inked his location as "99 Camp St., N.O" probably due to his stock printed cards being used up. CDV of who is probably a freshly minted lieutenant commander created on July 16, 1862 although the shoulder straps device is washed out and unreadable. Photograph by "Bingham's, Memphis, Tenn." A sharp photograph of a young ensign with single cuff stripe beneath star and canted anchor on shoulder straps (1864 Regulations), with imprint of "A.D. Lytle, Baton Rouge, La." Carte de visite of subject who is probably a master having shoulder straps with a single rank pipe and partially visible anchor device in middle (1864 Regulations). Late war carte photographed by "J.B. Leonard, Mound City, ILL." An uncommon view of a Fleet or Chief Engineer (over 15 years experience) indicated by the double cluster of three cuff bands (missing star) and shoulder strap with spread eagle devise (1864 Regulations). This CDV by "Leon Van Loo, Cincinnati." A Fleet Paymaster wore nearly identical insignia differentiated only by the style of the spread eagle devise on the shoulder strap. Last is a uncommon likeness of a Master's Mate or possibly a late war Midshipman (1864 Regulations) cradling his M1852 officer's sword by "H.A. Balch, Memphis Tenn." Midshipmen/Master's Mates were authorized neither shoulder straps or cuff bands (having only a star) and wore a simple wreath on the undress cap without an interior device. The Richard B. Cohen Civil War Collection Cowan's is pleased to offer an unparalleled assembly of Brown Water Navy images archived over a lifetime of study by consummate collector Richard B. Cohen, a familiar name to many in the field of Civil War photography. To those who knew him best, Richard B. Cohen will be remembered as a "disciplined collector who maintained a relatively narrow focus having built an important, perhaps unsurpassed collection in his area of specialization." Richard was particularly well read and his historical knowledge informed his collecting as reflected by the photography that follows. The array of carte-de-visites and albumen photographs gathered here include a number of identified naval officers - both famous and obscure - along with a handful of enlisted sailors. It is supremely evident that Richard B. Cohen's collecting instincts were always evolving, but uniformly refined. We trust that both advanced and neophyte collectors will find something to pique interest now that the time has come to inevitably recycle these exceptional images to a new cadre of aficionados. Provenance:The Richard B. Cohen Civil War Collection Condition: The five cartes all rate VG. or better. Three of the images are remarkably clear, two have noticably rounded corners while another has been clipped slightly. The Ensign view by Lytle shows a spot of minor toning in the field.
