an early portrait of a Union militiaman wearing a high-collared nine-button jacket and unusual brass-bodied epaulettes that appear to have cloth fringe instead of wire bullion. Alternatively, this could be a company grade militia officer if the epaulettes are brass and bullion cord. Typically, enlisted epaulettes when worn at all were plain brass scales in regular service or made completely of colored cloth for militia. He holds a M1840 artillery saber with red tinting applied to the trouser stripes and cords. The image is unidentified but probably New York State. Condition: The plate shows good clarity and is VG except for one large mat abrasion at 2 o' clock. Cover glass is dirty. Housed in complete composition case.
