Lot of 9 items. Printed broadside, 9.25 x 12.5 in., "The Salt River Gazette ---Extra." Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1867. The term "Salt River" frequently appeared in print from the 1830s through the 1870s, and was particularly used in reference to satirical political ephemera. The genre is noted to be especially popular in Philadelphia, and this broadside is likely published in that city as it references the Union League House. A series of vignettes on the broadside present negative imagery of African Americans. The bottom features a coffin and the caption "The Great Negro Party --- Born, 1856---Died, Oct. 8, 1867." A second printed "Salt River" broadside accompanies the lot as well, 9.25 x 12.5 in., "The Salt River Gazette---Extra." New York, November 6, 1867. Featuring similarly anti-black sentiment. This item appears to be rare, and unique, in that it was published outside of Philadelphia. Engraved image, 9.25 x 8 in, "Jan Tzatzoe, Andries Stoffles, The Rev. Dr. Philip & Rev. Messrs. Read, Senr. & Junr. giving Evidence before the Committee of the House of Commons." London: Fisher, Son & Co., 1846. Engraved by R. Woodman after a painting by H. Room. Lithograph, 8.5 x 11.25 in., "Band of Captives Driven Into Slavery." Illustration from The Life and Explorations of David Livingstone, ca 1876. Printed broadside, 15.5 x 22 in., with bold heading "Stanley's Wonderful Adventures in Africa!" Chicago: Unrivaled Publishing Co., 130 Adams Street, ca 1890. Rare broadside promoting the publication of the book H. M. Stanley's Wonderful Adventures in Africa, calling it The Most Fascinating Book of Travel of the Last 50 Years. Includes price information as well as a call for agents to canvass for the book seller. Political cartoon, 11 x 8.25 in., "The Dis-United States - A Black Business." Published in the British Weekly magazine "Punch, or the London Charivari," November 8, 1856. Cartoon depicts an English view of the impending American crisis over slavery, and features the image of an African American slave tearing a map of the United States flanked on one side by a man representing the agrarian South and on the other side by a man representing the mercantile North. The Forum Extra. A Periodical of Short Studies of Living Problems. Vol. 1. No. 1. New York: Forum Publishing Company, March 1890. A monthly publication containing essays from different numbers of The Forum, grouped according to subjects. This edition focuses on "The Race Problem in the South." Chromolithograph featuring identified image of the African slave trade, 14.5 x 11.5 in. Published in Berlin by F. Sala & Co. No date. Poor condition with heavy soiling. Compilation of slave imagery from unidentified print source, 18 x 12 in., featuring three images including slaves packed on a slave ship, a slave listing, and an African slave trader with a white slave trader.
