SOCIETE KHEDIVIALE DE GEOGRAPHIE, CAIRO An honourary diploma awarded to Stanley by the 'Société Khédiviale de Géographie' in Cairo on the 3rd April 1890. Manuscript calligraphic text in many colours within chromo lithographic border, framed but original in the presentation case inlaid with ivory lotus flowers, lions and serpents and inscribed 'Stanley', the corners inlaid with engraved metal scarab beetles 14½ x 19½in. (370 x 495mm.); together with a mounted presentation studio portrait of Stanley taken by 'Stromeyer & Heyman' whilst in Cairo bearing in gilt the arms of the Khedive, and a printed diploma awarded by Société Khédiviale to Stanley on the 17 t h February 1878,and given on 1 s t February 1887, signed by Bonola and Dr Abbate Pacha (Lightly browned, with several tears to margins). Stanley and his party arrived in Cairo from Suez on January 13 t h, 1890 on a special train, to great acclaim, staying first at Shepheard's hotel, then taking a house in Ismailia to start writing In Darkest Africa . By April it was finished and he set off for Europe.
