Soldier in India & the Sudan.- Wilkin (Walter Harold, soldier, of Sherwood Foresters, author of "Some British soldiers in America", of Yarty House, Membury, Devon, fl. 1895-1923) Diaries, 8 vol., autograph manuscripts, numerous pp., 1 vol. original cloth, gilt, the rest original limp morocco (not uniform), 8vo & sm. 4to, 1895 - 1923; and 7 other vol., including: an autograph book of Elizabeth "Bessie" Robertson as a nurse at the Red Cross Hospital, Finsbury Square in 1917-18, v.s., v.d. (15). ⁂ These diaries record Wilkin's travels in Sudan (hunting gazelle in the desert) and India (Oscar died of enteric fever). "Hamitallah told me this afternoon that the Arabs hunt the addax on horses with the help of dogs. They ride them down and spear them. He said that the oryx were so wary and so fast that they are very seldom killed. The arabs give their horses camels milk." - Wilkin.
