Sonnets from the Portuguese Author: Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Place Published: New York Publisher: Dodge Publishing Date Published: [1916] Description: Illustrated with 20 tipped-in hand-colored photogravure plates from photographs by Adelaide Hanscom Leeson; glassine guards; hand-colored woodcut head & tailpieces & initials. Colophon hand-lettered with a hand-colored initial. cm (10x7½"), finely bound in brown crushed full levant with elaborate art nouveau gilt-tooling and green morocco onlays. spine tooled and lettered in gilt with matching green onlays, top edge gilt, others uncut, gilt-tooled dentelles, moiré silk doublures. Copy C, one of four specially bound copies with hand-colored gravures and hand-colored decorations throughout (each of which is unique). Adelaide Hanscom Leeson (1875–1931) was an early 20th-century West Coast artist and pictorialist photographer who studied under Arthur Mathews and Anne Brigman. She would later join Stieglitz in the Photo-Secession. She was a pioneer in the advent of the photo-illustrated book. Early gift inscription dated 1917 on first preliminary blank.
