Aktivitäten an den Küsten Amerikas und der Philippinen zentral zu lenken. Wissenschaftl. ausgebildete Marineoffiziere erhielten auch den Auftrag, Küstenkarten der Iberischen Halbinsel herzustellen, und ab 1783 führten der Schiffskapitän V. Tofiño de San Miguel, S. Liniers, F. Bauzá, J. Varela y Ulloa und J. de Vargas Ponce in mehreren Kampagnen geodät. und astronom. Messungen sowie Detailaufnahmen aller Küsten Spaniens, span. Nordafrikas, der Balearen und der Kanarischen Inseln durch.
