Spanish playing cards. Garcia-type Pattern, Torrecilla de Cameros: Señora Pinillos de Vallejo, circa 1855, a complete deck of 40 stencil coloured woodcut playing cards, with indices and pintas, comprising 4 suits of 10 (Spanish suits), each with pip cards ace-7, and 3 full-length court cards, 4 of cups with maker's details, 3 pip cards with tiny brown edge spot, cavaliers of swords & cups, and 2 pip cards each with small area of abrasion, versos red paste marbled streaks, each card 91 x 57 mm, with original printed wrapper, bearing the name of Manuel Maria de Vallejo (rubbed with some stains and losses), 20 cards and the wrapper corner mounted onto a display board, encapsulated in clear plastic (not examined out of board), the remainder contained in a clear plastic bag, the board 59.5 x 42 cm (Quantity: 1) Denning (Spanish Playing Cards) p.54; Denning (The Playing-Cards of Spain) pp.60-62; Fournier, Spain 174; IPCS pattern sheet 25. Garcia was known to sub-contract the production of his design of playing cards throughout the 19th century. Señora Pinillos de Vallejo took over the business, that her father José Martinez de Pinillos founded in 1835, when her husband Manuel Maria de Vallejo died in 1852. She continued the business until 1970.
