There is no separate title-page; title is on the map sheets. 40.2x26 cm (15¾x10¼"), original cloth lettered in gilt "Vereinigte Staaten von Nord-Amerika. Rare German publication of J. Calvin Smith's landmark map of the United States, on 16 separate sheets bound together - the map extends beyond the Mississippi, and there is a large inset of North America (with the Gold Region named in California, southwest border in pre-Gadsden configuration). Warren Heckrotte notes that "I find that the political geography comes after the 1852 issue of the map, and before the 1854. I haven't been able to compare with an 1853 issue." Provenance: Sotheby's, 1/23/89 Lot Amendments Condition: Some dampstaining and wear to covers; minor creasing to some maps, sheet 7 with marginal repairs including 4x1" piece replaced in top left margin just touching edge of map; very good.
