Lamb, 388 x 504 mm platemark (430 x 542 mm sheet), English text on verso, small fleur-de-lis watermark. (Skilfully reinforced in part along central fold.) This is the last major derivative of the Smith map, Verner's derivative 9, published in John Speed's The Theatre of the Empire , London, 1676. It is "unique as an example of the transition from one basic prototype map to another. The delineation of the land area follows Smith while the toponymic prototype was the Herman map of 1673" (Coolie Verner in Tooley, The Mapping of America , chapter 4, p.170).
