Title: Sport and Photography in the Rocky Mountains Author: Williamson, Andrew Place: Edinburgh Publisher: David Douglas Date: 1880 Description: vii, 55 pp. Eighteen large photogravure plates after photographs by the author. (Folio) 16½x12½, original tan linen backed in gilt lettered leather, front cover lettered and pictorially decorated in black. First Edition. The author/photographer needed to take a break from pursuing stags on the moors of Scotland, so in 1878 he arranged a lengthy hunting excursion in Colorado; and he brought his massive array of photographic gear along to record his experiences and his trophies. The result was this extraordinary book, which enhances a very lively narrative with eighteen marvelous photogravure plates of the landscape, the hunting party, and their quarry--either dead in the snow or properly mounted back in Scotland. The huge camera, the light-sensitive plates, and the chemicals and other apparatus necessary for speedy development had to be hauled atop unhappy donkeys or by the hunters; and there were many difficulties and disasters. Phillips, American Game, p. 408; Streeter Sale 4103. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine well worn as usual; bubbling and soiling to covers; foxing to endpapers; else very good. Item number: 184925
