Stamps GB Pre Stamp, an unusual and historically interesting collection of 25 letters relating to the Lee Baronets of Hartwell. The principal subject being the life of Colonel Sir William Lee 5th Baronet; letters are both written to and from him and include other family members such as Lady Elizabeth Lee Sir William Lee 4th Baronet, Sir George Lee 6th Baronet and the 5th Baronet's maternal uncle Field Marshal The Earl of Harcourt GCB. Historically these items are of importance with the papers of the Lee family being held in a number of prestigious university collections both in the United States and within the United Kingdom. Subject matter of these letters focuses broadly on the topics of land ownership, politics, housekeeping and military manoeuvres and appointments. Of particular note is a letter from General Harcourt to Lieutenant Lee regarding insider knowledge about promotion opportunities. Their philatelic merits lie in the postmarks and additional franking seen on these entire pieces dated from 1785 through to 1799, and feature a number of interesting bishop marks. The collection is complemented by some research paperwork relating to the Lee family of Hartwell, a Canadian buffalo hide postcard franked 1907, and two further entire pieces dated 1734 and 1837 respectively. (excellent, 30 items)
