The Autobiography of Sir Henry Morton Stanley.
London: Sampson Low, Mardsen & Co., 1909. (180 x 260 mm). Edited by Dorothy Stanley Frontispiece portrait and 17 plates (including one folding map). Full green morocco stamped with a map of Africa on the upper cover under the words "Bula-Matari" in gilt, spine ruled and lettered in gilt with 5 raised bands, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, t.e.g., others uncut. Condition: short tear, thumbsoiling and clip markings to half-title; spotting to edges; light cornerwear. Provenance: Baron Leverholme (bookplate) presentation copy; number 26 of 250 copies signed by dorothy stanley Affixed to a front flyleaf is a small envelope housing Dorothy Stanley's compliment card to her family friend Sir William Lever, dated 1917. The card was once clipped to the half-title accounting for the marks there. Stanleys Autobiography written in the most part when Stanley 'retired' to his English country Estate in Surrey, has always been considered to have been doctored by his wife Dorothy who arranged for the work to be published after his death.
