Here, she rides atop a mule through an ocean of blood, her fiery hair symbolizing her wrathful aspect. See two closely related examples from the Qianlong period, published in Buddhist Statues in Yonghegong, 2002, pl. 112, and Chang and Hsu (eds.), Buddhist Art from Rehol, Taiwan, 1999, p. 108, fig. 36. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com Good condition overall, with restorations to the mule's proper right front leg and both hind legs, with evident adhesive under UV light. Obvious loss to Palden Lhamo's proper left hand and partial loss to the mule's tail, as is visible in images. Some insets missing. There is a thin layer of black residue intermittently throughout the surface as a result of exposure to temple lamps within the culture. Embedded dust also in recessed areas. The underside of the mule's stomach has an undisturbed consecration plate. Remains of red pigment in the hair and on the upper surface of the base. The base is sealed with a later base plate.
