STEINBECK, JOHN. Autograph letter signed ("John") to his second wife Gwyn, [Pacific Grove], 20 February 1949. One page, folio, on lined yellow paper, a bit creased from folding. Bitterly alluding to their divorce: "I got back from Mexico rather sooner than I had expected. The things sent to me had arrived in good order. I see that the poetry, classics, travel, drama etc. which I have collected for years and which I need, are not included. May I have a letter from you saying that you do not intend to let me have them? You see I will have to replace them. Please do this if this is your intention. It is interesting to me also that you did not send the little Gauguin still life--more interesting because you didn't like it. Please tell me how the children are [Gwyn was the mother of Steinbeck's two sons] and how they progress..." Not in Steinbeck: A Life in Letters, ed. Elaine Steinbeck & Robert Wallsten, and presumably unpublished. [With:] A photograph of Steinbeck and his bride Gwyn in a humorous pose on their wedding day, 29 March 1943, in the French Quarter of New Orleans, 10 x 8 inches, (255 x 205 mm.), photographer's stamp on verso, from Steinbeck's personal collection with his name embossed at bottom, on the verso is written "Bride & Groom" in pencil in an unidentified hand.
