STEINBECK, JOHN. The Grapes of Wrath. New York: Viking Press, [1938-39]. 161 sheets numbered every other sheet for a total of 324 pages (with additional pencilled pagination to outer margins of each page), printed on thin proofing paper on rectos only. Original tan wrappers, publisher's printed and typed notices affixed to front wrapper, minor soiling to wrappers, few corners creased, minor tears to 3 leaves affecting some text, slight creasing to labels. RARE UNCORRECTED LONG GALLEYS, cut in half then bound as an advance copy for more convenient reading. Such pre-publicaton forms of important modern literature are extremely scarce, given their limited distribution, fragility and frequent handling. This format is not listed in Goldstone & Payne and the only similar item for this title that we are aware of was offered in Bradford Morrow's catalogue of the Harry Valentine collection in 1980.
