STOOPENDAAL, Daniel (fl. 1680-1729). Orbis Terrarum Tabula recens emendata et in lucem edita . Rotterdam: [c.1680 or later]. Bible world map, depicting California as an island. This double-hemisphere world map originates with Visscher's of 1663 (Shirley World 431), which was published both in a Dutch Bible as well as separately. The present lot is a later variant published by Hendrik and Jacob Keur for their Dutch Bible, and although it is surrounded by the same allegorical representations of the four continents as the earlier Visscher map, the cartography is quite different. In the present lot, the previous peninsular California, attached to an extensive and speculative American north west coastline, is replaced by an insular California with a flat northern coast labelled Nova Albion ; a small island at about where Alaska is located is labelled Anian . New Guinea no longer appears in the western hemisphere, its place taken by an extension of Australia's northern coastline. Australia now also has a much more complete western coast, even if the southern coastline no longer extends as far east as it once did. South America, which once had remnants of a 'Brazilian bulge' divided by the hemisphere boundary, is now corrected and shown complete in the western hemisphere.
