Beschreibung:

STRANGE TALES No. 14 Author: Place: Publisher: Date: Description: Atlas (Indicia: "Chipiden Publishing Corp."). January, 1953. Fine- (5.5). Light bump to bottom spine, light rubs to top spine, very light edgewear, bottom right corner a bit curved. Off-white pages, edges tanning. ½" tear to margin of first page. Wonderful cover gloss. Pressable to 6.5 or higher? Cover artist uncertain (Atlas ace Doc V. suggests Sol Brodsky or Carl Burgos). Scripts by Stan Lee and, possibly, uncredited others. Art by Joe Maneely, Werner Roth, George Tuska, Mike Sekowski (possible Carmen Infantino inks), Carl Burgos. Atlas expert Dr. Vassallo says of "Horrible Herman": "Maneely's decorative inking is on startling display with a truly incredible amount of ornate detail in his panels. The actual story, about an ugly man who falls for a beautiful waitress, starts out interesting enough but Stan takes it to a silly climax... an unfortunate stumbling block for many horror/fantasy stories of the era." A limited edition of 100 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues are available. Over 200 pages, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcovers $40, dust-jacketed hardcover with limitation plate $200. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com or visit: https://www.pbagalleries.com/content/comics/. R. Crumb says, "I found [PBA's catalogue] so interesting that I am saving it for the texts that accompany the comics which were put up for auction. This is some of the best commentary I’ve yet seen on the quality of the content of comic books. I especially enjoyed the reviews of the post-war horror comics. Great. Priceless." Consignments welcome for PBA's Spring 2021 Comic Book sale. Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age and Silver Age comics, original art and ephemera sought. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
