Studio of Mathew Brady (active c. 1844-1860s) Hand-tinted Quarter-plate Daguerreotype of Mr. and Mrs. David Nichols, Jr., in an embossed leather case, c. 1852-53. Velvet pad reads "Brady's Gallery/205-207/Broadway. New York." at center. Plate size 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 in. (10.8 x 8.3 cm). Condition: Tarnish, accretions/deterioration and dust (probably associated with the glass cover), split case, worn and abraded, several areas of corrosion on brass mat, velvet pad and liner faded, not examined out of case. Provenance: Mr. and Mr. David Nichols Jr., to his sister Martha Nichols Daunis (1829-1865), wife of Sylvain Théogene Daunis (1826 -1890) of Belle Grove Plantation, Thibodaux, Louisiana; to their daughter Mattie Daunis Ten Broeke (1862-1944) of Middlebury, Vermont; descended through the Daunis Family, New Orleans, Louisiana. N.B. David Nichols grew up in the Nichols house, 250 Weybridge St., Middlebury, Vermont, now Atwater Commons of Middlebury College. In 1841, aged 24, he left for New York. An oil portrait of him hangs in the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, the gift of his nieces Effie Daunis and Mattie Daunis Ten Broeke.
