Masillosteus janei is considered one of the most rare fish species from the Fossil Butte Member of the Green River Formation of Southwestern Wyoming. Still in existence today, garfish display long, slender, laterally compressed bodies with powerful jaws and sharp teeth. Because of the short jaws and presence of crushing molariform teeth, they are thought to have fed on invertebrates such as snails, shrimp and crayfish. The present specimen exhibits brilliant dimension and scale patterns in virtually perfect alignment. Framed in exotic wenge wood and fitted with a cleat system for ease of wall display.
