Beschreibung:

.30-30 caliber, 18" barrel, S/N 156977 (mfg ca 1897). Gold-plated finish, deluxe D-grade checkered walnut stock with pistol grip and checkered forend. Take-down frame, half-magazine, cresent buttplate. Two-line barrel marking reads: MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN, CT U.S.A. / PATENTED OCTOBER 11, 1887. APRIL 2, 1889, AUGUST 1, 1893. Upper left barrel flat marked SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL, top of receiver marked MARLIN SAFETY, tang marked MODEL / 1893. Receiver profusely engraved with flowing Arabesque foliate scrolls with a dot-matted relief carved central panel on the reverse showing a buck fighting three wolves and with another buck in the forest as the central theme for the obverse panel. A small circular panel on the bottom of the receiver depicts a young buck. All of the surrounding metal shows the foliate scrolls, which extend onto the lever, receiver tangs and rear band of the take-down barrel section. The upper receiver combines the scrolls with geometric borders and another small foliate motif is present on the top of the buttplate tang. The work is almost certainly that of Conrad Friedrich Ulrich Jr. who worked at Marlin during this period as their master engraver. A similar deluxe engraved half-magazine, gold and platinum inlaid Model 1893 rifle was produced by Marlin for Annie Oakley and attributed to Conrad. This gun shipped on the same day, November 10, 1897, as the Ulrich engraved gold Model 1897 rifle offered in this sale. The guns were likely produced for display at the California Golden Jubilee held in San Francisco January 24-29, 1898. This is a superlative example of an exhibition grade gold-plated and engraved Marlin Model 1893 Rifle that would be a prized addition in the most advanced Marlin collection. Condition: Very fine. Retains nearly all of the Marlin factory gold plating with minor edge wear. All markings and engraving remain crisp and clear. Action is like new and bore that could use a light cleaning. Wood shows incredible figure in both stock and fore-end with crisp checkering and beautiful diamond panels and sculpted borders. Wood retains nearly all original factory high polish piano varnish with a few minor handling marks. A truly spectacular work of art Model 1893 in every sense and if that were not enough, it is an antique.
