SYNGE, JOHN MILLINGTON Autograph letter signed ("J.M. Synge") to Elizabeth C. Yeats of the Cuala Press, "Abbey Theatre," Dublin, 2 April 1908, 2 pages, 4to, small hole affecting two letters . Regarding publication of Deirdre of the Sorrows : "...I feel in a difficulty about this Deirdre book as it is not finished and at present I have hardly any time to work on it. If you announce it, and then I am not ready I suppose it would be a serious inconvenience for you and your subscribers...I do not know to how long the play will run with your pages. It will have three acts -- each of about 23 pages of type-write MS. I propose to call it 'Deirdre of the Sorrows,' a play in three acts...I have another scheme in my mind about some other work [probably Poems and Translations ] I have -- but I do not know if it is worth considering..." Deirdre was eventually issued by the Cuala Press in July 1910, more than a year after Synge's death. -- Autograph letter signed ("J.M. Synge") to [William A.] Henderson (secretary of the National Literary Society of Dublin and business manager of the Abbey Theatre), n.p., n.d. [docketed "probably July 7, 1908"], 2 pages, 8vo, on integral leaves . A business note: "I return the papers signed as I understand I was to do...I hope I shall see you later this week..." -- Deirdre of the Sorrows: A Play. Churchtown: Cuala Press, 1910. 8vo, original cloth-backed boards, paper label . FIRST EDITION, limited to 250 copies. Laid in as an ALS from Eliz. Yeats to the American collector Paul Lemperly, Churchtown, 2 Aug. 1911, 2 pp., oblong 8vo, with envelope (pasted in) , telling of the publication of Deirdre and Poems and Translations (also posthumous, but published first).
