Carvill, 1830. 426 pp. Engraved portrait frontispiece, numerous illustrations in text. 8vo (230 x 140 mm). Untrimmed in period boards, red cloth spine, printed paper spine label. Custom chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. Short paper flaw at foot of leaf 38/3, boards lightly soiled, cloth frayed along upper joint and spine ends, hinges cracked. FIRST EDITION. "Tanner, captured by the Indians when he was nine years old, lived as an Indian for about thirty years, thereafter making an unsuccessful attempt to re-assimilate himself in white culture. His narrative contains much information about the Hudson's Bay and Northwest Companies, and about Lord Selkirk's Red River colony" (Streeter). Part II, the work of Edwin James, covers Indian customs, astronomy, music, poetry, medicine hunting, and includes a vocabulary of Chippewa words and phrases.
